Understanding Your Full Blood Count Results

By IKAN Laboratory Team · 25 August 2026

A Full Blood Count (FBC) is the most commonly requested laboratory test, and for good reason: it gives a broad picture of your health in a single sample.

Haemoglobin (Hb) carries oxygen around your body. Low values suggest anaemia, which in Ghana is often caused by malaria, iron deficiency or worm infestation.

White blood cells (WBC) defend against infection. A high count often points to bacterial infection; a low count may follow a viral illness or certain medications.

Platelets help your blood clot. Low platelets are common in malaria and dengue and can cause easy bruising or bleeding.

Every IKAN report includes reference ranges beside your values and a flag showing whether each result is normal, abnormal or critical. Always discuss your report with a clinician rather than self-treating.
